Crystal Tones vs Other Crystal Singing Bowl Brands
Crystal singing bowls have never been easier to find, which makes quality more important than ever. Not all bowls are created equal: the materials, method, and intention behind each one determine whether it simply makes a sound or becomes an instrument for deep transformation. A standard clear or frosted quartz bowl produces a clean, simple tone. It’s beautiful in its own right and a wonderful introduction to crystal sound.
An Alchemy bowl offers something more layered. Blending several resonant materials in one crystal body creates a richer mix of overtones and harmonics, a sound many people feel in the body as much as they hear it. This page isn't about competition. It's here to help you choose your instrument with clarity.
What sets Crystal Tones' bowls apart:
01
The material
Quartz of extraordinary purity: 99.99% pure, sourced with care. But purity is only the beginning.
02
The Alchemy
Crystal Tones has developed its own process for creating strong, resonant bowls in a way that mirrors nature. They fuse precious gemstones, minerals and metals directly into the quartz. Through techniques such as high-temperature vapor deposition, these elements bond with the crystal at a molecular level rather than sitting on the surface. The result is a bowl whose sound carries the resonance of quartz along with the energetic signature of every element within it.
03
Individual craftsmanship
Depending on the alchemy and the size, each bowl had its own tone and frequency. No two bowls are the same.
04
Decades of refinement
More than 27 years of continuous development.
Crystal Tones was founded in Holladay, just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, by Paul Utz and William “Lupito” Jones. In the beginning, they made bowls from pure quartz alone, melting natural quartz at around 4,000°F and shaping it in graphite molds.
In 1997, they created something new: the first Alchemy bowl, made by fusing moldavite into molten quartz. It was the beginning of a new kind of instrument, and Crystal Tones became the first maker of Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls.
For nearly three decades since, Paul has devoted himself to crystalline sound, developing and refining the Alchemy bowls day after day. Crystal Tones began with devotion rather than a business plan: a deep listening to the relationship between quartz, vibration and consciousness. That exploration has grown into an art form that keeps evolving every day, with new alchemies, mineral fusions and frequencies still emerging today.
The story behind Crystal Tones
Each element brings its own character. Some alchemies sound warm and grounding, others light and expansive. Many bowls combine several elements, each adding a different layer to the overall voice.
Because every bowl is handmade and the elements settle into the quartz in their own way, no two Alchemy bowls look or sound exactly alike. Two bowls with the same alchemy and the same note will still each have their own character. This is part of what makes choosing a bowl such a personal experience: you’re not picking a product from a shelf, you’re finding the instrument that resonates with you.
Many practitioners choose a bowl not only for its note, but for the alchemy that speaks to their intention, whether that’s opening the heart, finding clarity or feeling more grounded. Below are some examples:
The Alchemy process is one of the most interesting and fascinating aspects of Crystal Tone Bowls. Every bowl begins with 99.99% pure quartz, heated to around 4,000°F, the temperature at which quartz melts. At this stage, while the quartz is still being formed, the chosen elements are introduced.
Using equipment and techniques developed over decades, including high-temperature vapor deposition, Crystal Tones bonds these elements into the crystal at a molecular level. They don’t sit on the surface like a coating or a layer of paint. They become part of the bowl itself. Pure quartz has a clear, bright tone. When other elements are fused into it, they change how the bowl vibrates. The result is a fuller, more layered sound, rich in overtones and harmonics, which many people describe as something they feel in the body as much as hear.
